The introduction to your dissertation/research project is of vital importance but many students often make one of two mistakes:
The aim of the introduction is to promote interest in your study. A good introduction should grab the reader's attention straightaway and should keep them engaged enough to want to read on after the introduction is finished. That’s why the introduction is important and should not be rushed.
Many students also make the mistake of trying to write the introduction at the beginning when they first begin to write up; that's a big mistake. It's much, much better to write your introduction at the end of your write-up when you've done your study and when you know what the rest of it says. This is important because the introduction needs to provide a comprehensive outline of the study.
A good introduction is short, usually making up only 5-10% of the word count for the entire study. The structure for a good introduction is as follows:
Sometimes an introduction also contains a literature review in which case it could make up 25-35% of the word count for the entire study. This is particularly the case if you're going to write your research project as if it's a journal article. Find out how to write an effective literature review here.
